Qualitative: Indicator of noble/two day, adulteration of noble kava with two day.

Chlorophyll:  Presence of aerial parts which contain toxic alkaloids.
Microbiological: Total Plate Count,  Yeast & Mold, S. aureus, E. coli, Salmonella

​​​Kava is available from many sources, but often retailers have little knowledge of their product.  They buy from wholesale distributors who simply sell "kava", with scarcely any information about its true source, cultivar, purity, or characteristics.  In addition to kava root, these vendors frequently offer extracts, tinctures, capsules, and other kava products that bear no relation to safe, traditional kava use.  Many times these products are made using two day cultivars, a type of kava known for its negative effects, rather than the pure noble kava that has been safely used in the South Pacific for over 3000 years.

Unfortunately, FDA requirements make no distinction between noble and two day kava, and merely specify that as a dietary supplement kava must be positively identified as Piper methysticum and be free from contaminants.  Many vendors do not meet even these simple requirements, and fewer still are able to assure their customers that they will receive truly noble kava.
